Highly recommend Prof. Herb’s class! The course includes around eight cases, each structured as a sequence of introduction → alternative strategy discussion → simulated board meeting → guest speaker. It offers a deep dive into various industries through a financial analysis lens. The workload is relatively heavy, but absolutely worth it!

Solid workload but very manageable. Professor Perlmutter brings in some amazing guest speakers and has a great network to pull from. My biggest qualm is that he sticks to his script to much, he is his best when you get him chatting about his experience, the class can be dry if you're not asking questions.

He brings in very cool guest speakers. However, I would have appreciated the class more if he covered few basics before diving into strategies

I think if you took his class seriously and practiced looking through 10-Ks and stuff it may be helpful. However, I think that his teaching style isn't the most engaging, but his guest speakers are pretty good.=

Pretty high level when it comes to finance, not a lot of hard valuation/analysis skills developed. Benefit of this class is hearing from a diverse group of CFOs that the professor knows who come in and discuss their backgrounds/Q&A. Course load is pretty light apart from a few presentations.

The class brings in CFOs to talk about their business (Skims, Revolve, Costco, East West Bank) which is cool. The early mornings were tough.

Course is not quant-heavy and rather focuses on the strategic and operational issues across multiple industries through the perspective of a CFO. You do several "board meetings" on cases and the respective CFOs are brought out as guest speakers.

there are a lot of assignments but they do not take a lot of time. Make sure you pay attention to the syllabus to not miss anything I think this class is useful for anyone who has aspirations to the C suite because if you do you will be working with a CFO most likely. I loved loved this class Herb and the guest speakers he brings in are incredible~

Overall it's a very practical class - teaches you how to look at accounting without having to be an accountant. Helpful if you plan on being in the c-suite later in your career. Guest speakers are also amazing. The only downside is the professor is incredibly disorganized.

Solid class. Professor could be more organized, but helpful perspectives and great information with the speaker series. Herb is awesome!!!

The best part of this class is the guest speaker series, which alone is worth taking the class for. Prof. Perlmutter is very kind and mellow. Not the most dynamic lecturer and some of the content gets pretty dry, but overall it's a useful class to take for anyone going into corporate finance, strategy, or general management. Grading is pretty easy.

This class was originally a popular class in Marshall. However, the previous professor left and now is taught by Professor Herbert. Nearly half of class sessions throughout the semester would be very low-quality simple student presentations. Only a few guest speaker sessions were valuable. If you want to take a very easy and chill class without using your brain, then this will be a suitable class.

Fantastic class. Workload isn't high, but you learn a lot and the CFOs that come in are top-notch. Really great for learning how companies make strategic decisions from a financial perspective. This is not an accounting course - fear not.

This is the best class at Marshall. Guest speakers are CFOs from major companies (Disney, SpaceX, Farmers Insurance, Netflix) and the "Board Meeting" assignments and class structures are a great way to force you to understand your positions and be able to poke holes in others. If you have the chance to take it, definitely do.

Historically CFO lens has been one of the best classes at Marshall. It was Herb's first time teaching the class, and there was a learning curve for him - resulting in some disorganized classes. I expect this to get much better in future semesters. And regardless, the class was still very valuable, and the guest speakers have been great. The guest CFO's are really the highlight of the class. If you have interest in being an executive one day, this is a class that will help give you great perspective on how CFO's think about their roles and different industries.

Herb is laid back and provides a wealth of practical expertise from his time as a partner at Deloitte. The guest speaker CFO's are definitely the biggest value add from this course and have experience in a breadth of industries from tech, to retail, to fin-tech. Structurally, the class has some opportunities, but Herb responds quickly to feedback and I feel confident that the course will be streamlined in future semesters. Definitely would recommend this course if you're interested in understanding the enterprise wide challenges that CFO's face and learn some of the toolkit that senior leaders leverage to drive strategy forward.

First and foremost, Herb is the man. If you want a class with a relaxed professor this is the one. With that being said he does have a bit of tightening up of the class to do but overall nice and interesting guy. I also want to emphasize that the true value of this course comes from the guest speakers he brings in. Hearing directly from CFO's is super interesting and while the names of the companies may not have been as prestigous as previous iterations of the class I think they still have great stories and insights to share! I would definitely recommend this class!
