Each class session has a different entrepreneur come in and talk about their journey, usually based around a specific theme. Great opportunity to learn about the many different facets of forming, scaling, and exiting a business. Professor pairs each one with a lecture / discussion session that can be a bit drawn out but worth it for the guests alone. Not much work: no reading, short response papers due before and after every class and one short presentation.

Very little work -- Harrer brings in guest speakers, some of whom have interesting stories.

The guests are mostly great, course work is easily manageable.
Fall 2022 · Mednick, Steven, Brian · 3 units
Guest speakers make this class. Workload is manageable (weekly "papers"). An overall "chill" class.
Fall 2022 · Mednick, Steven, Brian · 3 units
The class has regular weekly assignments (pre- and post-class write-ups), but no exams. The professor means very well and is enthusiastic; the class really shines because of the weekly guest speakers who are founders that come in to share in-depth reflections and advice based on their experiences launching and scaling their businesses.

I selected this course for personal interest. Most of the guest speakers were engaging and willing to share experience. One of the must-take courses for anyone interested in entrepreneurship. No exams; each week there are two papers but it should be an easy task.

Guest speakers each week - some are better than others but overall very interesting and engaging! Each week, a speaker talks about their own entrepreneurial journey; each week is focused a on different phase of starting a business

Very interesting speakers and worth learning for those interested in starting a new company
Fall 2019 · Mednick, Steven, Brian · 3 units
The class has great guest speakers which makes it a positive experience. For workload - there are two papers you have to turn in every week and one presentation (not that difficult and can be completed in 30 minutes). With that - anytime there are no speakers - the professor rants on and can be not as engaging. Professor does not take attendance. I'd say the Monday session (without guest speaker) is optional (people don't always show up).

This class is interesting if you're interesting in entrepreneurship--starting your own business, or understanding how businesses start/fail. I took this class to balance my workload. The main value from this class comes from the guest speakers. If they're not good, then the class session isn't good. Workload is minimal/manageable--1 pre and post module paper each week + 1 final individual project. I took this to balance the rest of my more quant-heavy classes.
Fall 2019 · Mednick, Steven, Brian · 3 units
This class is a waste of time. One of the worst that I've taken. The speakers are mostly lousy and the professor, Mednick, rambles incoherently. There have been a couple good speakers, but in my opinion the vast majority have not provided interesting insight into entrepreneurship. The papers are a joke and are pure busy work. I do not recommend taking a class with Steven Mednick.

Class quality highly depends on guest lecturer. Sometimes they're great, sometimes they're not. (They're usually not great.) Class without the guest lecturers is honestly a waste of time.

Great course for anyone interested in entrepreneurship, even if you aren't planning on starting anything for a while. Tons of great guest speakers with memorable insights.

Excellent lineup of guest speakers, not too much homework.

Depends on the topic- some weeks are more useful than others, but great to hear from founders and some of the dilemmas they face.

This class has become one of my favorite classes at Marshall. Class sessions are very structured/well organized and the speakers are amazing! Even if you are not looking to start your own business, there is a lot to take away from the class
Spring 2016 · Dann, Jeremy · 3 units
Great course if you are looking to hear about stories/tips/what-ifs at various sized start-ups. Course is open to 90% masters of social entrepreneurship students, making the discussions semi-irrelevant to MBA students. Other than that, course load is entirely writing papers. No exams.
Spring 2016 · Dann, Jeremy · 3 units
Weekly speakers presenting a challenge they experienced in management with their startup. Smaller start ups, not always super interesting. Relatively heavy work load with 6 papers throughout the semester (related to the guest speakers), a 5-min presentation and a big final project (individual or group). Professor is a little arrogant and tactless, but smart.

"- didn't tell us this had a social focus - mostly social entrepreneurship students - very touchy feely and pretty annoying to sit through - class discussions are opinion based and take horribly frustrating turns that are painful to sit through - Kinda like... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hfYJsQAhl0"
