I didn't really learn anything new in this class. There was very little organization/structure and the professor tends to ramble a lot. It's targetted for MSSE students so the content felt slightly more basic.

Jill is nice and provides dinner each night, which is the real and only highlight of this class. Overall, however, it is very unfocused and lacks real direction. There is no real insight provided, as she tends to just talk high level and read slides for three hours straight. It is also run like an intro to new ventures class, with very little to differentiate it or dive deep into the social side of business.

Fine class. Pretty laid back, not a ton of work, Jill brings dinner every week. Not as useful/interesting as I'd hoped but probably worth taking if you're big on social impact.

I would have preferred to take the course under Adlai Wertman honestly. The class under Jill was more like a social venture initiation class than a course about social entrepreneurship. But Jill is kind and brings in great speakers!
Spring 2017 · Kickul, Jill · 3 units
Project-focused course that is probably particularly useful for students who have a social venture idea they want to explore. For those without a specific idea, the course addresses some of the key differences between traditional and social entrepreneurship. I was surprised (positively) at how little overlap there was between this class and more traditional BAEP classes. Professor is very well connected, brings in good speakers, and has great resources for those interested in social entrepreneurship.

This course had us work through developing a new social venture that students in the course were actually pursuing or planning to pursue post-MBA. This professor is extremely open and provided dinner for every class! This class also attracts non-MBAs, which provides a diverse set of skills in group work.

Favorite class all year! If you've always wanted to change the world, "but don't know how", TAKE THIS CLASS. / / Professor Wertman is awesome! He teaches AND shows how you can go into an industry that you care about because it makes a difference. The speakers he brings in are incredibly passionate and come from various backgrounds and experiences.

The speakers in this class are amazing - they are helping me think about how to structure a social enterprise in the future.

Unless you have a burning passion for Social Entrepreneurship this class is awfully dry and boring. Professor speaks for a good hour and a half. There are often guest speakers in class who sometimes are passionate and engaging and interesting, but others who are just as dry. There is minimal engagement in class.

Big name speakers almost every class, panel of alumni, great mix of powerpoint and activities. Only midterm and final, as well as a group project. Must attend class, but it is well worth it!

The class starts off really strong; great guest speakers... but at some point starts to fizzle out. The midterm was cancelled like two days before b/c we didn't have enough material. A softer class; but also useful to realize that business is not all about the bottom line, and a company can do good and make a profit too
Fall 2015 · Wertman, Adlai · 3 units
The class is comprised of weekly guest speakers who are involved in various roles within social entrepreneurship. The class focuses on learning about the growing field as opposed to starting an actual social enterprise, so just be aware of that.

Very interesting guest lecturers, relatively easy assignments and tests

The professor really cares about the students and is very accessible. The class is almost completely case-based but it does require a lot of work. It is more of a consulting class that happens to only discuss environmental cases than a truly environmentally sustainable class. The teacher provides an excellent framework for attacking issues that would be helpful for almost anyone in any field but it does get repetitive. If this is a half semester class I would recommend it to most people, if it is a full semester class it probably makes more sense for students very interested in the subject area or those who are pursuing the environmental sustainable certificate.

great introduction to business frameworks in the social impact space. Very moving speakers. Mid-term is lousy and feels like an undergraduate exam/does not add any value to experience

Inspiring professor. Sometimes classes got a little redundant, however he brought in great speakers and getting learning about the world of social enterprises was refreshing.

Easy class not sure if it will be offered again. Very unbusiness school like in a good way

"Fantastic opportunity to learn about a different way of solving social and business problems. The only draw back is that it is a night class. It also has a lot of students from different programs which can cut both ways at times "
