Spring 2025 · Ansari, Arif · 3 units
The class BADLY needs to be adapted to add value because copilot does so much of it nowadays. Ansari is very kind & lenient, albeit a bit disorganized and hard to keep up with. On the whole though, it's extremely easy, and a bit more practical than core data science. Everything we do is in R, and we haven't done Tableau yet. Who is this class for? Anyone wanting experience with coding languages
Summer 2020 · Martin, Lorena · 3 units
Professor Martin is nice and entertaining, but very unorganized. I can see this being a very useful class, but as structured, it's all r-code which is probably easier learned on one's own.

Learn the entry level of R but we would have more efficient way of learning it, no logic thinking, just copy the coding from the screen

Highly misleading course, I thought there would be some Tableau learning but there is NONE. Coding in R/RStudio the entire time. Lorena was nice but not an effective instructor. Way too difficult for anyone new to coding. Learn Tableau on your own instead of wasting the credits. (Sidenote: all viz is done in R/RStudio with GGPlot2 and it's not even that pretty/nice).
Fall 2019 · Gabrys, Robertas · 3 units
One of the key learning outcomes of this class is to be comfortable with using R to read, analyze and visualize data. While the class has helped me in this, the teaching style can be a bit difficult especially if you are coming from a non-technical background.

I've learned a handful of useful r techniques, but Prof. Gabrys was not great about teaching the material and killed us on the midterm.

As a introduction to R, I think that the material was at the right level. I now feel comfortable talking about R.

Very useful skill set learned, which I imagine could be used to streamline creation of specialized charts. Needs some programming background or it'll be hard to keep up. Professor is very patient and willing to help students.

This class was super challenging for me, easily my hardest class this semester. If you have a background in programming languages, you will likely not find the class that difficult. The class is all about R which is a free downloadable program which can do some fancy data analytics, but you have to learn a new coding language to run it which is a pretty steep learning curve initially. If you want to cut your teeth and learn a new skill then go for it and sign up for the class--I'm just not sure how much I will use R in the future.

Amazing professor! It is primarily an R programming class, which I probably won't need in my career, but it reinforces statistical content in a visual way and helps me to communicate with developers and engineers.

If you're unfamiliar with R this is the class for you. You dive right in on day 1 and requires practice outside of class, but the benefits of R are substantial and can provide differentiation as a job candidate.

Lot of hands-on R training with loads of assignments that asked to reproduce some graphs. Does not give you any managerial learnings on visualization. Targeted for MSBA students. Unless you want to get into a role which needs use of R, I strongly encourage not to take the course. Professor is okay though.

R is a good skill to have, even though excel does everything much faster... lol but if you have even just a bit of programming experience, this shouldn't be too difficult for you. Especially if you enjoy it. If not, then maybe it's not the class for you :)
