You have a weekly group assignment starting in the 2nd half of the semester, which sometimes takes a while to complete. Who is this class for? Good for students interested in learning about DEI broadly. Final Thoughts: Shaun is very passionate about this field and does a good job in making it relevant to current events.

Course material is interesting and generally useful, but the way Harper teaches the course can limit the flow of conversation and make it difficult to contribute. Sometimes it feels like the professor and the TAs aren't on the same page, which can lead to some funny awkward moments. He's also seemed to have put this course as secondary to all his other responsibilities (highly resistant to sharing lecture slides, hard to get in touch with), but his TA AJ Mada will be the lead next year so this may change.

Dr. Harper is the best. This class isn't just a class where the Professor teaches you about what's currently happening in the work place regarding DEI, but it's an interactive session where you get to share your experience and insights on DEI.

I am a liberal and a feminist. I beleive some form of EDI training should be mandatory for all MBAs. However, this class does not meet the high standards that I expect from Marshall Classes. The class discussions are very surface-level and superficial. Shaun doesn't push us to think deeper. Every class session is actually copied from corporate presentations. Shaun can't even answer some of his own questions. He is unable to respond to our comments in a meaningful way. He doesn't ask for any feedback, but has repeated told us that he wants perfect scores in course evalutations. Moreover, I learnt a lot more about the topic from attending various D&I events and watching videos on YouTube.

EXTREMELY valuable class, really should be mandatory for everyone in the program. If you care about EDI and want to learn how to put that care into action in your career, each and every class provides practical and actionable takeaways. Dr. Harper is a leader in the industry and consults top businesses on how to advance in EDI, and he shares the same ideas, cases, and discussion topics in this class so we can all learn to be more effective leaders.

This is one of the best classes at Marshall by far. This is one of the only classroom arenas within Marshall to wrestle with business issues related to diversity equity and inclusion that we as business leaders will face throughout our career. Dr. Harper is a phenomenal professor who cares deeply about his students. He is receptive to feedback and aims to make the course as current and relevant to the issues that are happening in real time in the business world. This class is relevant regardless of your function or industry. Furthermore, this class gives valuable opportunities to hear diverse student perspectives and how students from different identities may experience the corporate world differently.

Class was very good in the first few weeks but went downhill very fast after we started the practical cases. I feel like the professor could do a better job at teaching us best practices on the subject and having key takeaways for the cases - sometimes there is no conclusion and the take away of the class is what we (the students) chatted

This is an extremely difficult course subject to teach, but one that is necessary for MBAs as future business leaders. Dr. Harper is a proven expert in this field and has lots of insight that he shares with us during class. He does have a tendency to go off-topic and misuse class time, but the tangents we go on usually provide additional color and context to the conversation that bring forth new perspectives. He does often talk about his accomplishments, but so does every other Marshall professor. In regards to some students who feel as though there aren’t key takeaways that are outlined at the end of the class, I want to offer a different perspective. The cases we discuss aren’t like normal case studies that have been edited for educational content, and that come with a lecture and a summary of key concepts. These are real world issues that are complex and can’t be summarized into a few bullet points. Dr. Harper messages that the class is a safe space, but some classmates no longer feel comfortable speaking. While it is important that the class be an environment in which everyone’s opinions are valid, I will say these conversations are supposed to make people feel uncomfortable. This discomfort is the way you learn and grow to become a more equitable leader in the future.

Dr. Harper brings up very engaging and difficult conversations, but these are conversations that need to be had. He doesn't provide you with all the answers and solutions, but pushes you to understand the challenges that others may face, and to come up with your own answers in unique and creative ways. This is perhaps one of my favorite classes at Marshall so far.

The first few weeks are very important and impactful, but the course crashes and burns after that. The topic is very important for us entering the business world, but the execution of the course needs a major improvement. Dr. Harper is knowledgeable, but instead of actually teaching, he does a great deal of showboating and discussion without actual concrete takeaways.

What an incredibly tough topic to teach; I think Dr Harper is the right person to teach this class. Who else has the hands on experience with EDI in business? No one. Is the class heavy sometimes? Yes. Is it always executed in the best way possible? No. But what do you expect? This stuff is HARD. Spending a semester thinking about this issue is just a beginning, but a start that we all so desperately need.
