Spring 2026 · Ho, Gordon, K. · 1.5 units
The workload is decent, not difficult at all. The course actually equips you with real world experience in handling different types of crises. The teaching style is amazing. Almost every class, we had big name speakers who spoke to us about the crisis that they managed. This class is suited for consulting, marketing and tech management.
Spring 2026 · Ho, Gordon, K. · 1.5 units
These topics and situations are so interesting. The class covers a wide range of crises, and the guest speakers are incredible and engaging. I'd say this is one of my favorite classes I've taken at Marshall and it has given me so many perspectives on how to deal with different people / problems.
Spring 2025 · Ho, Gordon, K. · 1.5 units
The course is only 1.5 units. You will have to read 1 case study every week and be prepared to discuss in class, but it's worth it because the cases themselves are interesting, and the professor also asked you to submit 1-2 questions for the guest speakers. There are 2 case write-ups and 1 group project + presentation throughout the course. Who is this class for? Anyone that is interested in business management Final Thoughts: I really love this class because the professor invited very relevant and high-level guest speakers from firms in the case studies. You will have an opportunity to have a dinner with guest speakers individually and network. What I also like about the course is the professor allows you to take the class on Zoom if you cannot attend in-person that day. He is flexible and friendly to students.
Spring 2025 · Ho, Gordon, K. · 1.5 units
This course is a 1.5 unit (half semester) so the pace is quite quick. Who is this class for? most useful for consulting, CPG, marketing and operations Final Thoughts: This class is very useful for anyone going into the corporate world. This showcases how every company will experience a crisis and ways to respond appropriately to them. Additionally, it provides tool to respond effectively. The professor is also phenomenal and has a strict-ish but very relaxed teaching style that keeps the class engaged. I would take another class with this professor.
Spring 2024 · Ho, Gordon, K. · 1.5 units
This class provided a very unique opportunity to hear from the coolest lineup of guest speakers, all of whom helmed key positions in charge of major organizations going through crises. We heard from CEOs, whistleblowers, and even the director of the white house situation room. Just getting to speak with these individuals made the class worth it. The actual assignments were just ok, not too hard but not too interesting. I absolute recomend this course for anyone.
Spring 2024 · Ho, Gordon, K. · 1.5 units
This was a fantastic class. Yes, this is an "easier" class and yes the concepts are not mindblowing, but if you truly understand the concepts Gordon is trying to teach and apply them to real life, such as with club leadership or work, this is an awesome class. I'd go so far as to say this should be a core class for EVERYONE. MBA jobs absolutely need this skill and its important to understand these frameworks for crisis communications. The concepts in this class are straightforward, but most people don't understand or apply them (see the case studies of various companies in class). The guest speakers are also great. Crisis communications are so, so incredibly important if you work, so this class is great for people who want a job coming out of an MBA.

I don't think there's any professor worse than Gordon Ho in all of Marshall. The class was all fluff - there was barely anything beyond the very-intuitive to the content - and the Professor seemed completely unaware of it. Seemed like a delusional fellow who expected cult-like followership from each one of the students, and would readily penalize you for questioning the utility of the class. Workload was extraordinarily high for a 1.5 unit fluffy elective.
Spring 2022 · Harper, Shaun, Ramon · 3 units
Dr. Harper is an excellent professor. He plans his class well but allows the students to dictate the direction of the conversation. This can be a challenging topic to teach, but professor Harper is absolutely incredible! There are weekly readings and a lot deliverables but they are doable. 100% Recommend.

Shaun pushes the class to think critically on a wide variety of DEI topics. Highly applicable to managers in any field. Would recommend to anyone who wants to become a more inclusive and effective leader of people.

This is a great class to learn about other classmates and open your perspective about DEI and its impact on business and our lives. While the class's content is very poignant, I tend to think that Shaun also talks a LOT about himself and the work that he does. To be fair, it's important and he's done a lot of great things, but he has a tendency to bring a lot of the topics and comments made in class to circle back on something that he's achieved.

This class should be required for all Marshall students. Shaun is a very engaging and empathetic professor who pushes people to examine their beliefs. A majority of class time is spent talking about personal experiences in life, at Marshall, or in the workplace. Readings are thoughtfully curated and add practical value for how to aply course concepts, although not too much time is spent discussing them in class. Assignments are creative and will help students learn how to speak thoughtfully and purposefully about DEI.

Really a great class. Lots of useful, practical material and discussion, and great guest speakers. Strongly recommend.

Easily one of my top two favorite classes at Marshall. This subject matter is really valuable and I think would be beneficial for every Marshall student. Gordon is AWESOME, and his network is unbelievable. The guest speakers are out of this world good. Cannot recommend this class and Gordon enough. Everyone should take this course.

I think this should be a required class for all Marshall students. It is fantastic. Professor Ho is a crisis specialist and worked on the Princess Cruise covid crisis so has tons of real world experience. The guest speak list is STACKED - former CEO of Samsung during the exploding phone crisis, former head of the White House situation room during 9/11, former CEO of Sony Pictures during the North Korea cyber hack, etc - truly the best guest speaker who actually dealth with some of industry's biggest crisies I have heard of at Marshall. As future business leaders, we will all have to deal with unfortunate situations and this class gives you excellent foundational skills and then builds on them with incredible real world examples.

I think very highly of this class and Dr. Harper, and it's also really nice to be in a classroom where everyone around you is invested. If you value diverse classrooms, this is one of the best settings to learn from your colleagues. If you care about DEI and plan to take it seriously in your career, start now by taking a class from an amazing professor who sadly happens to be the only black man teaching graduate classes at Marshall.
Spring 2020 · Harrington, Katharine · 1.5 units
I enjoyed the class discussions, though the class covers a lot of different topics, and the short class length didn't really allow us to get into enough depth on any one topic. At the same time, because we spent so much time on discussion I don't feel that I learned any particular frameworks or tactics for dealing with crisis management. There's also a little too much reading for how short the class is, but overall it was a really interesting class. (It would've been even more interesting right now)

This class transcended my specific career aspirations - I daresay the cases and conversations from Prof. Harrington's course would be useful to any student with any chosen career function. Seriously. I can't recommend Professor Harrington's class enough.
Fall 2020 · Harrington, Katharine · 1.5 units
Very kind and engaging professor who helps stimulate good conversation. Cases are interesting. The downside is applicability - all analysis is critiquing an organization after a crisis, but less emphasis is given to what realistically could be done when a problem was discovered (hence the problem with applicability). Class plays the role of legal prosecutor after the fact rather than company management during the crisis.
