Kelly is a great professor and super passionate. Regular course work (weekly HW and Quizzes) but the actual course load is light. Just be ready to power-walk to Viterbi to get to class on time... [useful field] Yes - if you are interested in sustainability or greentech. The class is a fairly non-technical survey of global (but very US-focused) energy generation and associated environmental impacts, and lots of focus on current events and issues. You don't need to be an engineer to take the class.

This is the BEST class I have ever taken at Marshall (lol, it is at Viterbi). Professor Sanders is such an awesome professor - she's so knowledgable, organized, passionate, and her lectures are so interesting. She covers the entire energy mix (transportation, electricity, agriculture) with a focus on emissions and the environment, and weaves public policy and overall societal impacts into every class, including covering 2-3 news articles from the last day or two that tie into our course in each lecture. There is a homework and a quiz each week (sometimes with readings - like Biden's climate plan, or New Yorker articles) but the work feels really releveant and interesting and never like busy work (plus she drops the lowest two quiz and homework grades, and no exams). Totally doable for a non-engineering background. Highly recommend for anyone interested in renewable energy and or climate change and the environment.

"Amazing professor who has outstanding credentials and is passionate about the topic. Perfect for anyone trying to get a primer in energy fundamentals, electricity, and the industry in general. Classes are very much lecture based, with a few homeworks, a group research project, and multiple choice exams. No hardcore engineering content. Good opportunity to enjoy a Viterbi class on the other side of campus, and meet students outside of the Marshall bubble."

This is an awesome class! As a non-engineer, I was intimidated to take a course at Viterbi, but the only quant is on the HW, not the tests, so it's very manageable. If you are pursuing a career in energy or even just interested in the topic I highly recommend! I am learning so much, and Prof Sanders is passionate and very organized.
