The class workload is extremely heavy, and the assignments are overly complex without sufficient feedback. It’s difficult to learn when we don’t understand what we did right or wrong. The professor makes things unnecessarily complicated, and overall, the course seems better suited for students with prior PE/VC experience.

As comments above mentioned, super heavy workload, professor is a harsh grader, and he coldcalls people during class. Good content but daunting.

Fall 2024 · Moyer, Stephen, G. · 3 units
The heaviest workload I have ever had in one class. Also, Moyer is very nitpicky and intimidating. Still learned a ton about finance and valuations but at a pretty steep cost.
Fall 2023 · Moyer, Stephen, G. · 3 units
This class is a very intense, project-based course that requires 100% dedication in order to do well. The exam is extremely difficult and all topics are fair game. Professor can be slightly intimidating but this bootcamp approach to finance is representative of various shops so this course will be beneficial in the long run. The speakers are extremely knowledgable in the topics of corporate venture capital, privae equity, USC and Yale funds, venture lending, etc. If you take this class, know that you will have to complete a 3 statement model and work really hard during weekends.
Fall 2023 · Moyer, Stephen, G. · 3 units
A must-take. You do need to ccommit long-hours on weekends for this class (12-15+). However, this class has taught me more than most of my Marshall classes combined. Highly recommend if you want to pursue a career in finance (whether that be buy-side, sell-side, etc.). Take this class and you'll be dangerous in industry
Fall 2023 · Moyer, Stephen, G. · 3 units
If you're serious enough to make a career in the finance industry, this is a MUST take for you. The steep learning curve will help you get accustomed to the real life pressure of working in a core finance role and push you to learn a ton of things in a short amount of time. Incorporating theoretical concepts with practical cases will help you alot! A MUST TAKE FOR SURE!
Fall 2023 · Moyer, Stephen, G. · 3 units
Highly recommend. The class is hard in many senses, but can 100% learn a ton from it. Very experienced and erudite Professor, good at teaching, and very structured class. The content covers many critical topics of investment and finance and many fantastic guest speakers. One caveat is that the workload is pretty heavy, I would say it's the hardest class in Marshall, but it's also the one that I learned the most.
Fall 2023 · Moyer, Stephen, G. · 3 units
The best of the best classes at Marshall. Professor Moyer is extremely knowledgeable and experienced professional. Extremely high-quality class content. The class is challenging, but you will learn a lot. The only con is that there are many heavy assignments in the first half of the semester. If you want to take very chill class without using brain, then not recommend.
Spring 2022 · Little, Brian · 3 units
I took Little for this class but to be honest he seems pretty check-out. The work load is pretty light but not sure that he teaches most nights. I would take Moyer if you can.

This class was very hard with Professor Moyer but forced students to learn the ins and outs of PE/VC/IB. Hardest most rewarding class offered at Marshall

Prof. Moyer is tough but knows his stuff. This course is a lot of work, please take it if you are seriously interested in the PE/VC industry. Guest speakers are great. There is something due/ long readings every week
Fall 2020 · Moyer, Stephen, G. · 3 units
This is not an easy course. Lots of assumed knowledge (a weakness of the class) and lots of small assignments. That said, Moyer really knows these topics and has excellent insights into the industry. Some of the guest speakers are good, many not so much, but overall if you are interested in Finance you should take this class and will get a lot out of it.

There is a wealth of information(great info) that is impossible to absorb. Professor does not relay concepts well and practice problems nonexistent. It is very difficult figuring out what the professor wants exactly. I do NOT recommend this professor. Quality of guest speakers pretty trash.

The professor is probably strict, but the way the course is designed, his content and speakers are great. The course is designed in such a way that you learn from your peers too - you grade their models, professor cold calls students who gave good answers to cases to share their views with class. I have no Finance/VC background, so a lot of learning for me and I liked it.

If you don't have strong accounting and finance understanding you will suffer. Guest speakers are good, some of the cases are interesting. However, the assignemnts are the worst experience I had at Marshall. It is very confusing, all excel models have issues, the deadlines are short and instructions change every time (be ready to check your BB many times).

"The start of this class was really intense and required a lot of work. The professor is also very rough around the edges and can come off poorly. After the frist few weeks, the workload lessened to a reasonable amount (though still challenging) and the course got more enjoyable. This class is not for anyone who doesn't have finance and valuation experience. Taking Abram's Finance and Valuation class first is almost a must if you want to take this class."
