Carter is very strict with his policies and can be a bit of a hardass about laptops and staying current with readings, but if you stay within his guidelines, he's a great professor and very insightful Who is this class for? People interested in a career in sports or wanting to discuss the sports world through a business lens Final Thoughts: You don't have to be a big sports fan to do well in the course, but it helps because you'll need to stay up to date on the events & trends in the industry.

Carter front-loads with plenty of course readings to put you in the mind of sports entertainment business, not fandom. Immersing yourself is the only option in being able to do well in this course. Who is this class for? Students in sports marketing, consulting or looking to break into either of those things. Final Thoughts: David Carter is a hard egg to crack, but he's an immensely knowledgeable professor that will make you think better and differently about sports entertainment.

Professor is demanding and a tough grader. However, I think it is a very worthwhile and interesting class if you have an interest in sports at all. Good amount of reading each week related to a variety of sports topics.

Pros: very sports focused. Professor is really knowledgeable in the industry as he has years of expereince in it. Brings in about 4 guest speakers to talk which is cool. Professor is chill and likes to crack jokes here and there. If you like sports, you can get by this class pretty easily. Cons: expensive course reader. Quizzes (2 for the class) are based off the readings, guest lectures, and additional articles and the questions can be mind bogglingly specific. Lastly, NO COMPUTERS during class.

This class is great if you have background knowledge of sports and the sports world. Carter really knows his stuff but students without prior exposure to the material will be lost

For someone who has zero interest in consulting or entertainment, I don't totally hate this class. It's much more entertainment focused and the professor does a good job of teaching you how to think about this industry in a new way. If you don't like sports or entertainment I wouldn't take it. The professor can be a grumpy hardass and he just lectures the entire class which can sometimes be so boring and hard to follow (especially since he hates electronics and doesn't allow laptops). But if you learn his humor and show that you're engaged in class you can win him over.

I was not a sports fan coming into this class but figured as someone in entertainment, it would be important to have this knowledge. I am so glad I took the course! The professor is pretty tough at the beginning but he softens up throughout the class and is super knowledgable about the world of sports. Workload is reasonable and he's brought in amazing guest speakers!

As a big sports fan, I'll never look at sports the same way after this class. A really nteresting look at the industry by a professor who knows his stuff and cares. He's pretty gruff and not for everyone's taste but don't be fooled by week 1 tough guy stuff - he's actually great. Workload is very reasonable, good guest lectures.

Super interesting course, discussion topics, and awesome guest speakers. Carter is just a tough professor and an unnessarily harsh grader on the group project and exams. Overall great course if you are interested in sports, but just beware Carter is going to be hard on you.

This class is good for learning about sports strictly from the business side of the industry. As someone recruiting for sports, the class is a good excuse for me to stay up to date with what's going on in the industry. Usually the professor starts the class by seeing if anyone has any sports news they want to share/discuss with the class. The guest speakers are all very senior level execs and are often open to connecting after the class.

Professor with an incredible amount of experience consuling in the sports industry and connections - more so than any other professor I have had so far. You do not have to be a sports die-hard as, in fact, he really tries to drive home the things that underpin the industry (government relations, labor stability, media, etc.) - it is not really about winning/losing. For each class you read 3-5 articles and then come in and discuss. If you read, attend class, pay attention and take notes in class, you will do fine. There are two 20 question, closed book mult choice exams (not cumulative) that he intentionally makes tough and curves. There is also one group paper/project of your choice that acts in place of a traditional final exam. The professor has a dry, sarcastic sense of humor. I like it, but it may not be for everyone. As long as you don't get your feelings hurt easily and know that is just his approach, you will be fine.

This is a great class and Professor Carter is awesome once the class warms up to him (he's a little intense at first). Classes are all discussion based, so there is a fair bit of reading/prep work required for each session, but Carter is really an expert and has a ton of relevant sports/consulting experience. He brings in an impressive group of guest speakers to break up the lectures as well. Highly recommend if you are interested in the business of sports, but wouldn't recommend just taking it becuase you like sports as that is not the style of the class. As far as grades go, there are 2 pretty difficult multiple choice exams and a group project with several graded components, but all in all Carter is a tough grader.

This has been my favorite class at Marshall so far. Profeesor Carter can be intimating at first, but after the first few classes the class dicussions have been pretty conversational and not just a professor lecturing you. He brings in some impressive guest speakers as well. As someone interested in the business of sports, I find the readings interesting and do not feel they are burdensome or feel like they are "homework" in the traditional sense. However, if you are only a fan of sports and do not have interest in the business side, this class will not be for you.

This class is great for anyone wanting a career in sports or a career in consulting. Each class requires a fair bit of reading for prep and then a lengthy discussion about the readings. I like this professor a lot but he can def come across intense at first. Be prepared to work and a preliminary understanding of the US sports industry is super helpful (international students or non sports fans might struggle with leagues and terms this teacher assumes we all know).

The class covers a wide array of sports topics and is super interesting. Prof. Carter is a great resource and knows a ton but he's tough when it comes to grading. Sometimes the class discussion gets off topic. Guest speakers are great.

Professor seems relatively hard on grading. Brings up on the first day how 10% of the class usually fails, but not sure if that is true or not. There are two 20 question multiple choice tests that are worth a combined 40% of your grade and you will either remember the answers from the reading or not for most questions. 15 page group paper and presentation is other big part of the grade.

Class could probably better. Professor emphasizes how he doesn't like sports, just the business of sports so be aware of the distinction ahead of time. Professor likes to banter and can rub people the wrong way.

If you don't have a strong interest in sports or interested in a career in sports, I wouldn't recommend this class. It's largely a discussion class based on current events (articles) and long course reader pieces, with minimal lecturing. You can get away with not reading the longer stuff but you'll still be expected to contribute in class. We have 4 guest speakers who are high-ranking executives in the sports and live events industries. If you're interested in sports as a potential career, then this is essentially a must-take class. Keep in mind that the professor has a very dry sense of humor and can be so direct it may come off as harsh at times. He could be more clear with his directions and grading rubric and is quite opinionated, but he knows what he's talking about and has a ton of experience and connections. Make sure to leave your fandom at the door—he strictly wants to talk about business implications which is largely a good thing.

There are some interesting guest speakers, but a lot of it is Carter pontificating and rambling about a given topic and his certain consulting projects within that space or adjacent to it.
