Spring 2018 · Folkes, Valerie · 3 units
This class should be a 1.5 unit based on the current content. It feels like an undergraduate class and could be sped up significantly. There is a straight-forward midterm and final and a larger consumer journey mapping project which should not be bad to complete. There is significant overlap between this class and New Product Development.

Extremely useful insight into.. as the title suggests, consumer behavior. Useful for product managers, entrepreneurships, strategy and of course marketers striving to figure out how to appeal to their market segments.

Outdated professor

In theory, this class is important and the content is very relevant. The problem is that the material was a little old fashioned and outdated. She brought a guest speaker that was really good, and the workload is pretty fair (4 quizzes, only counts 3, and fairly easy, and a group project). Overall, could be better but not too bad

The professor is unprofessional and unprepared. Content is outdated, which is a HUGE shame...there is a lot of great material on the topic.

This class has interesting concepts, but very much like an undergrad class.

Extremely poor and useless content. Feels like an undergraduate class. Lots of useless theory/terms, outdated examples and readings, assigments that don't require any mba-level skills. It's a waste of time and especially money.

This course added little value to my MBA experience. Professor often goes off topic and has outdated examples (i.e. before e-commerce, Amazon, etc.). I'm not focused on marketing so I wanted a course that would really help build out my understanding and this course failed to do that.

I took this class thinking it'd be a cross section of strategy, psychology & marketing and instead it is a middle school class taught by a woman stuck in 2004. There are approximately 25 articles to read a week and they are all old (1950s to 2005) and completely irrelevant to what's going on in marketing and consumer behavior right now.

The worst class I have taken at Marshall. The information was so basic and all the examples were pulled from the 1990s.

Class is taught by Rook and I think he's retiring after this semester - but overall the class is a bit fluffy, but I think I'm learning more about the importance of qualitative research and could probably run a focus group now so I guess that is valuable.

Dennis Rook is very funny and entertaining. Some of the examples are a dated, but he does a great job of giving opportunities for you to discuss topics. The midterm kind of snuck up on us as being very detailed with examples from the reading, while the lectures are mostly his own career stories.

This class is a decent opportunity to learn the nature of consumer behavior. However, don't expect it to be engaging. The focus group experience was valuable, however.

The group projects are helpful in understanding how to conduct consumer behavior research. The material that is taught is sometimes outdated.

Important class if you want to do most marketing. Class is decently structured, and Rook is a nice guy... maybe not the best professor, but he's not bad. I would 3 overall.

It is an entertaining class with Rook. He has a lot of experience in the Consumer Behavior space and will tell you relevant and humorous anecdotes. Workload is light (two quizzes, one group paper, one group project). If you pay attention in class and do the readings you will learn.

Best Professor for an evening class. Rook is entertaining and knows the subject matter. It is his bread and butter.

The professor's real-world experience and knowledge bring a richness to the subject matter of the course. My only piece of constructive criticism is that he should focus more on the subject matter to ensure he stays on point (sometimes the lectures wander), but the course is very interesting and informative.
